Apps to install before you go

Korea runs on its own apps, and Google Maps only half works here. Install these at home on Wi-Fi — all free, all with English menus.

Taxis

k.ride — Kakao's taxi app for visitors

Made by Kakao Mobility for foreign visitors: English, Japanese and Chinese menus, sign-up without a Korean phone number, and payment by overseas card, Alipay+ or WeChat Pay.

Uber

Uber Taxi runs in Busan, including to and from Gimhae Airport. If you already use Uber at home, it works with the card in your account.

Kakao T — for longer stays

The taxi app most locals use. Signing up and paying is smoothest with a Korean phone number and card, so it suits exchange students with a local SIM; short-term visitors usually find k.ride or Uber easier.

Talk & translate

Papago

NAVER's translator, built for Korean. Point your camera at a menu or sign to translate it, or speak and show the driver the screen.

KakaoTalk

Korea's messenger. Landlords, schools, tour operators and many shops will contact you here. You can sign up with your own phone number.
